This Thing Called Eye Relief
By Ralph M. Lermayer Perhaps no part of a riflescope’s specifications is less understood than eye relief. Many hunters don’t have a clue what their pet scope’s eye relief is, nor do they care. As long as they can bring Ol’ Betsy to the shoulder and instantly find hair in the scope, it’s perfect. Eye relief is the distance from the rear lens your eye requires to see a full picture. The industry average for a fixed-power scope is about 3 1/2 inches. For most variables, you’ll start out about there at the lower power, and about 2 1/2 inches when you crank up to to max magnifcation. The lower number is often hidden on the spec sheets of variable scopes, with only the easy-to-live-with, higher number listed. Others provide both numbers so you know what to expect when the scope is cranked up to the highest power. Continued... The Model 77 Hawkeye Compact Magnum introduced in 2008 was the beginning of a popular trend at Ruger. Its 20-inch barrel was chambered to .300 Ruger and .338 Ruger. Walnut and blued steel or synthetic and stainless steel were other options. During the next year the Compact Magnum was joined by the Alaskan in .375 Ruger, also with a 20-inch barrel. Barreled action choices were stainless steel with either a natural matte finish or with a tough black coating. It also had a Hogue synthetic stock. The Alaskan was replaced by the Guide Gun in 2013.
The Guide Gun was the first snub-nosed Hawkeye I shot, and it is easily recognized from a distance by a colorful Green Mountain laminate stock. I took one in .375 Ruger to Alaska for grizzly and could not have chosen a better rifle for the game and the conditions. Still in production, the Guide Gun is available in .30-06, .300 Win. 10 Deer Hunting Myths Debunked
Misconceptions: A talking head on outdoor TV puffs his chest and declares, “Man, the full moon is the worst time to hunt!” Sounds pretty good, and you buy it. Your daddy told you never to overhunt a spot, and you never doubt Pops. Stands to reason that if another hunter tromps too close to your treestand, your day is ruined, right? Uh, no, to all three of the above. Let’s change your thinking on some misguided beliefs about big deer and how to hunt them. 3.) If some guy tromps close to your stand, that spot is ruined for the day. One November morning Indiana hunter Chris Thomas went to his ladder stand and got a shock — some slime bag had ripped it off! Chris was royally bummed and didn’t know what to do. He plopped down beside the tree to think, and just after sunrise a gang of pumpkin-colored hunters marched by on a deer drive. What the heck else could go wrong? Chris had nothing better to do, so he sat tight. Two hours later he looked up bug-eyed as a huge buck raced down the ridge with some does. He aimed his shotgun, and the buck tumbled over. Chris’ tenacity rewarded him with a 198-inch non-typical giant. It clearly happens on public ground and can occur on private land. When another hunter walks under your treestand, or roars by your blind on an ATV, you’re naturally going to think he spooked every deer within a mile. You’ll get mad and flustered and want to move to a new spot or go home. Don’t. As long as the intruder hikes or drives on and gets gone in a hurry, sit tight. A buck might have been 150 yards away, standing stock-still and hidden in thick cover until the intruder passed. Or a 10-pointer might have been a half-mile away and was never aware of the guy’s disturbance. Either way, a shooter buck might stroll into sight 20 minutes or three hours later and turn a miserable start into an epic hunt.
