MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING

MUZZLELOADER MYTHS: By Ralph M. Lermayer
Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting.

Myth 8: A Ramrod is a ramrod is a ramrod — About 10 years ago, an innovative ramrod appeared on the scene. The Power Rod has a folding T-handle that rides flat against the barrel when not in use.

It’s hard to believe dozens of wars were fought with muzzleloaders, and no one came up with this ingenious device. Loading, cleaning, seating bullets in a dirty bore, anything you ask a ramrod to do is easier and done in half the time with this rod.

The Power Rod is available in a variety of lengths from Cabela’s. Thompson/Center also includes them on many of their great rifles. Get one for your rifle and save your old rod for the bench. You won’t ever go back.
Putting Meat On The Table:
Pedersoli Brown Bess

The Pedersoli Brown Bess musket is another interesting choice for a traditional muzzleloader that has a lot of history behind it. However, from an American perspective, the Brown Bess is unique for being used primarily on the other side of the conflicts fought in the 1700s and early 1800s in North America.

As a .75 caliber smoothbore musket, the Brown Bess is also a somewhat unusual choice for hunters. Even so, it’s still a very capable hunting muzzleloader at short range and the British military used it for many decades for the simple reason that it worked very well for them. You’re limited to using a patched round ball with the Brown Bess, but those large bullets hit hard and have plenty of stopping power inside their effective range.

Pedersoli manufactures the Brown Bess as a fully assembled product as well as a kit you can finish yourself.
  • Overall Length: 58 1/2"
  • Barrel Length: 42"
  • Rifling Twist: Smoothbore
  • Caliber: .75 Caliber
  • Ignition System: Flintlock

Have You Ever "Purposely" Hunted With Double RB Loads?
by Toby Bridges

Note that I threw in that word "Purposely" in the above headline. That's because, after more than 55 years of loading and shooting muzzleloading patched round ball rifles, I'm sure that many of you have at one time or another forgotten to pour in a charge of powder ... or unintentionally dropped in a second powder charge ... or perhaps forgot to load a patched ball ... before priming the pan or slipping a percussion cap on the nipple. Which also means that, whether you ever knew it or not, you've just as likely loaded a second ball on top of the first.

The "Second Muzzleloading Rifle" in my life was one of the percussion Tingle .50 caliber half-stock plains style rifles, which had been built with a 1-in-66 twist Douglas barrel. It was a great shooting patched round ball rifle, which showed a real preference for an 80-grain charge of Hodgdon FFg black powder behind a .010" patched .495" diameter sphere of lead. I took several deer with the rifle the year before enlisting in the Marine Corps. I remember one buck very vividly. It was the first morning of the November Illinois deer season. The buck came slipping down a narrow valley ... offering an ideal completely broadside shot at about 60 yards. I held for that sweet spot just behind the facing front shoulder ... and when the rifle belched fire and smoke into the damp early morning air ... that buck dropped on the spot. The deer was the very first I had ever dropped at the report of the shot.

I got the deer field dressed, noticing that the heart and lungs were a real mess. Then I looked inside the chest cavity to see if I could see where the ball had punched through the rib cage. Much to my surprise ... there were two entrance holes about two inches apart ... and when I looked at the other side of the rib cage ... there were also two exit holes that were about 3 inches apart. I knew that I had put exactly 10 of the lead balls in my possibles bag the previous evening, so I pulled out the small cloth tobacco bag I used to carry them ... and sure enough there were just 8 in the bag. Without realizing it ... in my rush to get the rifle loaded ... get out of the door ... and get on my way to the stand ... I had patched and seated two balls over the powder charge!.

Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting

Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter.

(10): Watch the Wind.
Muzzleloaders are smelly. Add your stink to the sulfuric odor of that cannon, and you have a recipe for white flag soup. Deer have been known to detect danger with their nose from up to 450 yards away. That’s out of muzzleloader range. Keep the wind in your favor. Implement good scent control. When possible, choose entry routes that flow in the same direction as your scent cone will as it travels away from the treestand. Use a wind checker often. Dried milkweed seeds are likely the best natural wind-checking tool in the woods, but you can bring baking flour from the kitchen, too.

TREASURES OF READING
Folks, here are some great books to read...THIS IS A MUST READ!

Buy Today...Great Reading!! Death In The Ashes
by William W. Johnstone (Author)

...the natural enemy of every free man is his government

The war against the cannibalistic Night People continues as Ben Raines and his rebel army initiate a scorched-earth policy, systematically destroying the once great cities of America and forcing the half-human, half-hellborn monsters into the open. But as the rebel mop-up team pushes through the smoking rubble of Dallas, Raines is nearly shot and killed. The death squad was dispatched by Matt Callahan, a warlord headquartered near Custer's battlefield in Montana. Like Ben, Matt was a writer before the Great War, but unlike Ben, Matt has chosen a lawless path. Now Ben must go north, and face his old friend in hand-to-hand combat—as one more bloody last stand is fought on the banks of the Little Big Horn to decide the fate of America.

There are thanksgiving pies, cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, dessert breads, cobblers, cookies, bars and much more to choose from. Plus, many of these thanksgiving dessert recipes are easy to make!

Pumpkin Cobbler – this yummy pumpkin dessert is so easy to make, and tastes just like fall. It is absolutely incredible with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Easy pumpkin cobbler that magically makes its own cinnamon caramel sauce as it bakes.

It seems crazy to just pour water on top of your cake, but trust me, it all works out. You don’t need to stir it together. As it bakes, the water and sugars sink to the bottom to form a yummy sauce, and the cake rises to the top. It’s magical!
    Ingredients:
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • Toppings:
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

  • Preparation and Cooking Instructions: 15 Minutes

  • Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and spices. Add the pumpkin, oil, and vanilla. Stir just till blended.
  • Spread into a well greased round casserole dish or 9" square pan.
  • Mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and walnuts in a small bowl. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Pour hot water over the top.
  • Bake at 350° for about 50-60 minutes. The cake will rise to the top, it should be cooked through, but there will be sauce at the bottom.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

European Parliament backs ban on biometric mass surveillance
by Hannah Hart

MEPs are also calling upon EU lawmakers to ban social scoring systems and tackle algorithmic bias

Members of the European Parliament have voted in support of banning biometric mass surveillance entirely, stating that individuals should only be monitored if they have been suspected of a crime, and not otherwise.

This potential win for public privacy would put an end to the automated recognition of people in public spaces through their biometric features, and EU lawmakers are also being called upon to ban AI-assisted predictive policing and the use of private facial recognition databases.
