Putting Meat On The Table
Weatherby VAC

The Vanguard Adaptive Composite ($1,269.00), otherwise known as the VAC, is an incredible bolt-action rifle that’s powerful enough for taking down deer and elk, but also designed to shine in tactical situations.

The VAC is available in the following cartridges: .223 Remington, 6.5 Creedmore, and .308 Winchester. It has a bolt-action lever that’s comfortable and easy to use, making this rifle perfect for hunting trips and tactical competitions. The only downside to this gun is that the stock is designed only to accommodate right-handed shooters.

The biggest advantage of the VAC is its accuracy, which is guaranteed to be sub-MOA when firing Weatherby ammunition. Some of the other incredible features of this rifle include:
  • Triple gas ports on bolt body to helps ensure the safety of the shooter in the event of a backfire.
  • Ergonomic butt and cheekpiece design that provides quick and comfortable shouldering.
  • Adjustable two-stage trigger optimized for a crisp trigger break.
  • Owners can easily modify their VAC with a number of Weatherby products.
The bottom line is that the VAC is a well-rounded rifle that can be used for virtually any situation, and like other Weatherby models, the VAC has a reputation for being accurate, reliable, and easy to shoot.

Have You Ever Owned A T/C Hawken?
by Warren Center

How many of you got started into muzzleloader shooting and hunting with the rifle shown here - the Thompson/Center Hawken rifle?

Originally built in .45 and .50 caliber, the rifle was introduced in 1970...and remained in production until early fall 2012. I acquired my "first" T/C Hawken back in 1971 - Serial No. 625. The rifle had a .45 barrel on it initially, but within a couple of months I had acquired a .50 caliber barrel, also with a low serial number. Since I had gotten the rifle for hunting deer, I gravitated to the .50 caliber barrel more than the .45. The big 370-grain .50 caliber T/C "Maxi-Ball" delivered a lot more wallop than the 240-grain .45 bullet of the same design.

Prior to getting this rifle, with both .45 and .50 caliber barrels, I had never attempted shooting a muzzleloader at 100 yards. I became so obsessed at getting the rifle, especially with the .50 caliber barrel, to keep 'em in the "Kill Zone" at 100 yards, I mounted one of the early Bushnell 2.5X long eye-relief handgun scopes on that barrel - to tap whatever the barrel could produce. The 1972 photo at left shows a much younger and trimmer me ... preparing to take an off-hand 100-yard shot with the rifle.

Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting

Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter.

(4): Find a Routine
Test different powder and projectile combos through your gun. Different models prefer different brands and types of bullets and powders. As you’re developing a favorite load for your gun, make sure to keep the barrel clean. “Finding the load your gun likes can take many shots, causing quite a bit of fouling to build up in your barrel,” Smotherman said. “Barrels can become constricted due to powder residue buildup, making for accuracy changes with every shot. Always swab the bore between shots with a damp patch, and then a dry patch, while sighting in your gun.”

Once you find the load your gun likes, it’s important to remain consistent. This is true with any form of shooting, but especially when using muzzleloaders. “No matter what bullet, powder and primer combo you’re using,” Smotherman says, “make sure to follow your routine the exact same way every time.”

COMFORT FOOD

Why You Need to Try Black Bear Meat Now
Recipe:Leg of Lamb with Spicy Sauce

"Enjoy this modern Leg of Lamb with Spicy Sauce recipe.."

Colonial Food during the 17th century was quite different than what we eat today. Religious beliefs, location, and harvest played a role in what was available and how much they ate.

In some cases, food was scarce and many early colonists endured possible starvation and malnutrition. As the population increased and colonies became more developed food became less of an issue and each region began to develop their own unique flavors.
    Ingredients:
  • 7 pound leg of lamb
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 bottle chili sauce
  • 6 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 tablespoons vinegar
  • 4 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 or 4 green peppers, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, mashed (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 3 cans beef stock

  • Preparation and Cooking Instructions:
  • Mix together the chili sauce, Worcestershire, vinegar onion, green pep per, garlic, thyme and beef stock. Season the lamb with salt and pepper and place in a roasting pan. Pour the combined mixture over the lamb and roast at 325 degrees, covered, for 2½ to 3 hours, depending upon the size of the lamb. Baste frequently. Remove lamb from roasting pan. Remove fat from the sauce. If desired, the sauce can be put in a blender and blended until smooth. Serve the sauce with slices of the lamb. This can be prepared in the morning. Leave the lamb at room temperature, then reheat in the oven before serving.
