Putting Meat On The Table
Montana Rifle Company

Are you in search of a rifle powerful enough to take down medium-sized game but designed with more style and creativity than your average hunting rifle?

The Mountain Snow Rifle, or MSR, by Montana Rifle is a sleek blend of blue camo patterns that give it a stylish look while helping the rifle blend into a snowy environment.

The MSR is a bolt-action rifle that comes available for the following cartridges: .300 AAC Blackout, .204 Ruger, 5.56 NATO, .223 Remington, and .223 Wylde. Aside from its incredible design and versatile cartridge selection, the following features help make it one of the most awesome rifles of 2017:
  • Comfortable XCoil recoil pad.
  • Ambidextrous bolt-action design.
  • Mauser-type ejector for optimal dependability with feeding rounds.
  • Easy-to-operate detachable magazine box.
  • Swivel studs for easy bipod mounting.
Overall, the MSR model is a great rifle for hunting medium game like deer and boar, and is also great for target shooting on the range

The .50 Missouri River Hawken ...
by Toby Bridges - Montana

If I were hard pressed (and really not all that hard) to choose which of today's modern reproduction muzzleloaders currently available IS my favorite ... right off, I would have to say it is that rifle shown in the photo at the top of this page and directly above - the Pedersoli .50 caliber Missouri River Hawken. Like it's big brother the Pedersoli .54 caliber Rocky Mountain Hawken, these two extremely near look-alike half-stock rifles definitely share some of the truest Hawken lines and styling of any modern copy of the famous St. Louis built original Hawken rifles. In fact, the only features differentiating these two models is that the 34 5/8-inch barreled .54 Rocky Mountain Hawken has that slightly larger bore ... which is rifled with a slow 1-in-65 rifling twist - while the slightly shorter 30-inch barreled .50 Missouri River Hawken is rifled with a really fast 1-in-24 rifling twist. These two models are so alike, the parts readily interchange. I shoot and hunt with both, and often swap the "hooked breech" barrels back and forth ... because one had come with a gorgeous curly maple stock. (Either version can be bought with either an American walnut ... or ... curly maple stock.)

I had actually acquired my 1-in-24 twist walnut stocked .50 caliber Missouri River Hawken a couple of months before completing my move from Missouri to Montana in late fall 2007 ... but did not get to hunt with it until 2009 due to a restriction in Montana requiring a person reside in the state for "AT LEAST" a full year before being able to buy resident licenses. But, it wasn't until 2012 that I actually had the opportunity to take a buck with the rifle. That whitetail was a young 3x3 meat buck, taken at 90 yards ... shooting a 90-grain charge of GOEX FFg and a big hefty 480-grain cast lead conical bullet. Thanks to the 1850's period correct 6x Wm. Malcolm "telescopic rifle sight" offered by Hi-Lux Optics, the rifle and load were right on at 100 yards ... and the shot put the buck down quickly and cleanly.

Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting

Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter.

(3): Bet on a Bullet

What bullet should you shoot? Old-school hunters with traditional equipment can consider patched round balls and conicals, but for modern inline muzzleloaders, there are basically two types. “One type is the full-bore bullet with a gas check at the base that contains the pressure once the powder is ignited,” Smotherman said. “The other type is an under-bore size that requires a sabot.”

Sabots need to be loaded exactly the same way every time. “Your sabot has petals on it,” Smotherman said. “Make sure one of those petals is always in perfect alignment [with the barrel, for consistency’s sake]. This ensures that every bullet exits the barrel the same way.”

Also consider the weight of the bullet. “Bullet weight is highly debated amongst muzzleloader shooters,” Smotherman said. “The two most common weights are 250- and 300-grain projectiles. Both will work just fine. But I prefer heavier bullets. I shoot a bullet that’s as close to 300 grains as possible. Heavier bullets are longer than their lighter counterparts, making them stabilize better in flight, which results in better accuracy.” Smotherman says the added weight helps with penetration and knockdown power, too.

TREASURES OF READING
Folks, here are some great books to read...THIS IS A MUST READ!

Buy Today...Great Reading!! Preachers Peace
by William W. Johnstone (Author)

...the natural enemy of every free man is his government

Long before there was a mountain man called Preacher, a young adventurer set off with a team of fur traders from St. Louis for the time of his life. On a wild frontier, he sought a fortune. Instead, he found blood, betrayal, and the beginning of a legend. Armed only with a knife, surrounded by a fierce Blackfoot war party, the young man was forced to kill a warrior chief in an act of audacious courage. But when a grizzly bear attack left him half-dead, he could no longer protect himself. By the time the Blackfeet found him again, he had been abandoned and doublecrossed, with only one last trick up his sleeve: the ability to talk himself out of an impossible situation -- and into a battle for his life.

So began William Johnstone's masterful saga of the courageous loner who would become known as Preacher. Because when he was alone and desperate, he drew on a preacher's skills -- and a mountain man's cunning -- to give his enemies hell.

COMFORT FOOD

Why You Need to Try Black Bear Meat Now
Recipe: Beef brisket

"Enjoy this modern Beef Brisket recipe.".

Colonial Food during the 17th century was quite different than what we eat today. Religious beliefs, location, and harvest played a role in what was available and how much they ate.

In some cases, food was scarce and many early colonists endured possible starvation and malnutrition. As the population increased and colonies became more developed food became less of an issue and each region began to develop their own unique flavors.
    Ingredients:
  • 3 pounds brisket, fat removed
  • 1 package onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/3 cup prepared horseradish (optional)

  • Preparation and Cooking Instructions:
  • Place brisket on a large piece of heavy foil in a large pan. Sprinkle onion soup mix on top and pour over the red wine. Wrap up foil tightly. Put in 325-degree oven and cook 3½ hours. When done, pour off liquid, strain, add the horseradish if you wish, and thicken with the flour. Taste for seasoning. Pass sauce with sliced meat.
Serves 6-8

Sellers Beware of Payment Dispute Scam!

This comment was made by an eBay seller, and if you read the new greed rules by eBay, they win...YOU LOSE!

Beware of following scenario.
Buyer claims item not received, though tracking shows it was. Claim immediately ruled in seller favor. Next day buyer supposedly files dispute with financial institution. Ebay asks that you provide tracking, even though you already have. Since the process seemed a bit different than before Managed Payments, I spoke to Ebay CS rep. She told me they forward tracking to the financial institution, but result is out of their hands. What? You follow the stringent Ebay rules so that you think you are protected and this is what you are told? Ebay CS being what it is, I iniiated another phone call, thinking the previous person was typical of the uninformed service in general. This time I was told same thing, and furthermore, if found in buyer's favor, a $20.00 fee is assessed to seller. Again, I say, WHAT? You follow the rules, and they hang you out to dry?

Two thoughts:
1. Prior to MP this would not happen. When Paypal managed payments and this happened, they covered you with their Seller Protection. Ebay is not.
2. Not only is ebay not protecting you here, they are actually charging you $20.00 if the case goes buyer's way!!! Let that sink in. Buyer gets item and money returned. Ebay collects fees plus $20.00 for their involvement. You, seller, get screwed. This is simply legalized theft!

NOTE FROM MG: I read the eBay new rules, and you the seller are going to get nailed for everything, especially if you sell or buy outside of eBay, or you don't meet their performance standard, one of many other ways they can take your money.....YOU LOSE. I also quit selling on eBay!!!
