Are You Using Too Much Scope?
By Clair Rees Winter was setting in along the Utah-Colorado border. It was two days before Thanksgiving, and I was slogging slowly through a foot of snow blanketing the Dolores Triangle. I’d drawn a late-season permit for the area. Hunting had been spotty here during Utah’s 10-day October deer season, when only “so-so” bucks were in residence. I was after one of the mossyhorns that descended from Colorado’s high plateaus to winter in the Triangle when the weather turned foul. It was snowing lightly when I left the tent that morning. Less than an hour later, I was bucking a real blizzard. Hoping the snow would let up before long, I sat with my back against a large sagebrush that blocked the wind, and settled in to wait. The blizzard eventually petered out, and only a few scattered flakes still drifted from the sky. Before getting to my feet to shake the snow from my coat and pants, I carefully looked around. A flicker of movement caught my eye, so I raised my binocular for a closer look. Like me, four mule deer had bedded down to wait out the storm — and one was a huge 8-pointer! Continued... The Mossberg Blaze-47 semiauto rimfire rifle is available with a traditional wood stock or a flat dark earth polymer stock. The AK-47 Blaze feeds from either 10- or 25-round magazines. My FDE polymer-stocked model shipped with the latter.
Checking in at 4.5 pounds, it’s light but feels good in the hands. The buttstock is a six-position adjustable. Length of pull is 12.25 inches with it pushed all the way in; the midpoint is the common 13.5 inches, and all the way out it’s 15.5 inches. It’s easily adjustable via a locking device on the bottom, and once released it locks into detents along a bottom rail. The stock is capped off with a rubber buttpad to prevent the gun from slipping off your shoulder. The plastic halves of the receiver and fore-end show a gap, but they are otherwise well fitted top and bottom. The fore-end is comfortable to grip, with square-patterned impressions to secure the gun in your hands. There are vents near the top of the barrel to mimic the AK. Continue.... Misconceptions: A talking head on outdoor TV puffs his chest and declares, “Man, the full moon is the worst time to hunt!” Sounds pretty good, and you buy it. Your daddy told you never to overhunt a spot, and you never doubt Pops. Stands to reason that if another hunter tromps too close to your treestand, your day is ruined, right? Uh, no, to all three of the above. Let’s change your thinking on some misguided beliefs about big deer and how to hunt them. 2.) Never, ever, overhunt your best stand One day years ago, way before his Bone Collector days, Michael Waddell dragged a P&Y 8-pointer into our camp on Montana’s Milk River and announced with his customary flair, “The alfalfa stand is hot, y’all!” The next afternoon I climbed into the same lock-on in the cottonwood tree and drilled a 135-inch 9-pointer. When whitetails are still on summer patterns and locked into a bed-to-feed routine in early bow season, don’t hesitate to hunt your best stand two, three, or maybe even four days in a row as long as a favorable wind holds. Though more unpredictable, this can also work when it’s cold and snowy in December, and run-down bucks are drawn to one of the last best food sources. If and when you hunt a stand for multiple days, be as quick, quiet, and scent-free as you can on the walk in and out. The less intrusive you are, the better your chances of striking before the deer patterns change and the spot goes cold.
