MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING

Barrel Fluting: What Does It Do?
By Jon R. Sundra

Fluting makes a barrel distinctive, but there are other benefits, too.

Photo: Fluting usually does not extend the entire length of the barrel.

One of the most distinctive options available to anyone contemplating the purchase of a rifle is a fluted barrel. It can be a sporter-weight hunting rifle or a varminter. It doesn’t matter. Fluting sets it apart visually from the run of the mill.

Some fluted barrels are more cosmetic than functional, with narrow, shallow flutes. Others are as deep as the barrel wall thickness will allow.

There are even spiral-fluted barrels. E.R. Shaw (ershawbarrels.com), holds two patents on spiral fluting, so when you see a barrel that looks like it’s wearing its rifling on the wrong side, it’s gotta be a Shaw barrel!

And speaking of cosmetics, some gun and barrel makers blacken their fluted stainless barrels, then final polish them on the outside so the flutes remain black and in sharp contrast to the barrel’s silvery outer surface. Weatherby was the first gun manufacturer to do it, but a few others have since adopted the procedure.

Putting Meat On The Table:
Traditions Kentucky Flintlock Kit:

By Layne Simpson
No list of the best muzzleloaders for hunters would be complete without a traditional muzzleloader. Well, it’s doesn’t get much more traditional than a flintlock Kentucky Rifle, which is about as different from the CVA Paramount as you can get. In addition to helping you channel your inner Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett, this kit also gives you the full hands-on muzzleloader experience by building it yourself.

The kit comes with all the necessary parts to build an authentic Kentucky Rifle along with easy to read, step-by-step instructions on exactly how to put it all together. The finished product is a fully functional Kentucky Flintlock Rifle with a full-length walnut stock, beautiful solid brass furniture, an octagonal 33.5″ rifled barrel, and a case hardened lock.

Note that this rifle is designed for use with true black powder and the 1:66″ rifling twist rate is best suited for patched round balls, so you’ll get the full traditional muzzleloader hunting experience with this Kentucky Rifle. Sabots and conical bullets probably won’t shoot very well in this muzzleloader, but part of the fun that comes from using a primitive muzzleloader is hunting with a plain ol’ round ball.

When all is said and done, it’s the perfect muzzleloading rifle to display above the mantle or to take afield in pursuit of game with your coonskin hat. As a flintlock muzzleloader, it’s also legal to use in virtually every state, to include the Pennsylvania primitive weapon season.

Traditions also produces this exact hunting rifle in a kit with a percussion ignition system. Additionally, if you don’t want a kit, you can also purchase both the flintlock and percussion cap ignition models of this rifle as finished products.
  • Overall Length: 49″
  • Barrel Length: 33.5″
  • Sighting System: Open Sights
  • Caliber: .50 Caliber
  • Ignition System: Flintlock

Losing The Right To Hunt ......
by Toby bridges

We're closer to losing all opportunities to hunt than many of you may realize. There are many people ... anti-hunting organizations ... and state, federal and global agencies which are hell bent to eliminate hunting. And, yes, some of those "agencies" include a number of so-called "Game & Fish" departments. How they are accomplishing a well funded effort to put an end to hunting just may surprise you. This article shares a look at a new 2022 website which aims to counter the efforts and lies of that anti-hunting movement.

Note from MountainGnome Online: We have an old saying in the hunting, farming, and ranching community about these over populated predators..."SSS"!! Continued...
10 Deer Hunting Myths Debunked

Misconceptions:

A talking head on outdoor TV puffs his chest and declares, “Man, the full moon is the worst time to hunt!” Sounds pretty good, and you buy it. Your daddy told you never to overhunt a spot, and you never doubt Pops. Stands to reason that if another hunter tromps too close to your treestand, your day is ruined, right?

Uh, no, to all three of the above. Let’s change your thinking on some misguided beliefs about big deer and how to hunt them.

4.) Stay out of your best spots until the wind and rut conditions are just right, then move in and hunt a buck.
Generally, that’s not a bad way to think. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past 30 years it is that sometimes you gotta say to heck with it and hunt your target buck right now, especially on public land. If you don’t risk it, another person will move in and hunt “your” deer. Or a food source will change from clover to acorns, or a doe three-quarters of a mile away will come into heat and pull all the deer over there. While you sit home and wait for the right wind and the stars to align, “your” buck leaves the area or somebody else spooks or kills him.

Be smart, but don’t be afraid to spray down with scent-killer and hunt a buck on an iffy wind every once in a while.

TREASURES OF READING
Folks, here are some great books to read...THIS IS A MUST READ!
Buy Today...Great Reading!! A Death Valley Christmas
by William W. Johnstone (Author), J.A. Johnstone (Author)

From William W. and J.A. Johnstone, the bestselling masters of the American West, comes a special holiday entry in the Jensen family saga. This time, they’re risking their lives for peace on earth—and for a piece of hell called Death Valley...

A JENSEN CHRISTMAS SHOWDOWN
A JOHNSTONE TRADITION

Ace and Chance Jensen usually spend Christmas at the Sugarloaf Ranch. But this year, the brothers are heading to Death Valley to claim Chance’s prize in a poker game: the deed to a silver mine. Sure, the mine is probably dried up and worthless, but what they don’t realize is that half the deed belongs to a ruthless outlaw named Foxx, a rich vein of silver hasn’t been tapped yet, and another wealthy mine owner is trying to crush the competition—by killing every miner in the valley...

The Jensen boys didn’t plan on a Christmas gunfight. But when they show up at the mine—and learn that a charity worker is using the silver to fund an orphanage—Ace and Chance can’t help but get into the holiday spirit. ’Tis the season of giving, after all. But instead of gifts, they’re swapping bullets. And instead of Santa Claus, there’s a surprise visitor coming to town. A man named Luke Jensen—Ace and Chance’s gunslinging father—and he’s here to spread peace and joy. With a double-barreled dose of holiday cheer—gunsmoke.

COMFORT FOOD

Why You Need to Try Black Bear Meat Now
Recipe: Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnuts
By Tessa Arias

Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnuts are coated in glaze and taste just like the cakey ones at your favorite bakery! No yeast makes this recipe quicker and easier.

These Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnuts are just like the old-fashioned cake doughnuts from the bakery. They’re kind of crunchy and cracked on the outside, making those nooks just purrrrrfect for soaking up the thick, shiny, crackled glaze. We completely dunk the doughnuts in that glaze in the recipe, and it’s amazing. The inside is soft and cakey with a more firm bite than yeast doughnuts. Plus you can’t beat sour cream, it’s good with just about everything.

I don’t always prefer old-fashioned cake doughnuts to yeast doughnuts, but when I do this is absolutely the recipe I use. You can’t beat how much less time these take than yeast doughnuts, too.
    Ingredients:

    For The Donuts:
  • 2 1/4 cup (255 grams) cake flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (29 grams) butter, at COOL room temperature
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup (113 grams) sour cream
  • Canola oil, for frying

  • For The Glaze:
  • 3 1/2 cup (350 grams) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup hot water

  • Preparation Instructions:

    For The Doughnuts:
  • In a bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar together until sandy. Add the egg yolks and mix until light and thick. Add the dry ingredients to the mixing bowl in 3 additions, alternating with the sour cream, ending with the flour.
  • Mix for 30 seconds on low speed or until the dough is smooth but slightly sticky. You want to mix enough that the dough doesn't fall apart in the oil, but not so much that it becomes tough. If the dough is unbearably sticky, add extra flour one tablespoon at a time (especially if you live in a warm & humid climate).
  • Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour, or until firm.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or two differently sized biscuit cutters to cut out as many donuts as possible, dipping the cutters into flour as necessary to prevent sticking. You should get about 12 doughnuts and holes. If the dough gets too loose, sticky, or greasy at any point return to the fridge to firm before continuing. Refrigerate while you heat the oil so the dough is slightly cold when it fries.
  • Pour 2 inches of canola oil into a heavy bottomed pot with a deep-fry thermometer attached. Heat to 325°F. Fry the doughnuts a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry on each side about 2 minutes, being careful not to let them burn. Keep an eye on the thermometer and adjust your stove heat to maintain the correct oil temperature. Let drain on a paper bag to soak up the excess grease.

  • For The Glaze:
  • Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a whisk until smooth.
  • Immerse each doughnut into the glaze.
  • Place on a wire rack above a sheet pan to catch any excess glaze.
  • Let sit for 20 minutes until glaze is set.

  • NOTE:
Doughnuts are best served the day they are made but may be stored in an air tight container at room temperature for a few days.

Safari 15 bug exposes your search history and personal identifiers to websites
by Danka Delić

The bug could expose your search history and Google User ID to third-party websites – a major privacy issue that Apple hasn't resolved yet.

A fingerprinting and fraud detection service, FingerprintJS, has recently discovered and described a bug in Safari 15 that can track browsing activities and even reveal your identity to websites. Everyone using the latest version of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, as well as the Safari browser users, is at risk of data leaks.

About the bug

The Safari 15 bug originates from Apple's implementation of JavaScript API, called IndexedDB. The implementation, however, violates the same-origin policy of IndexedDB – a principal security mechanism that restricts documents and scripts from one origin to interact with resources from another. This results in the bug allowing one website to access a database of another website, whereas in normal conditions, this should never be the case. As a rule, indexed databases each have a separate origin, and documents and scripts of one origin should never be able to access different origin databases.
