TREASURES OF READING
Folks, here are some great books to read, while sitting by that warm fire in the evening........

Buy Today...Great Reading!! Christmas on the American Frontier, 1800-1900:
by John E. Baur
Reprint of a 1961 work published by Caldwell Printers (Idaho). Begins with the transplantation of the European Christmas to America, and gives a taste of traditions and conditions of pioneers celebrating the holiday, with extracts of quotes and anecdotes from their journals. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

Buy Today...Great Reading!! Rocky Mountain Christmas: Yuletide Stories of the West
by John H. Monnett
By evening everyone present agreed that the Christmas festivities were "the greatest known to that date" in the entire Taos region and Kit Carson was "chief over it all." For the first time in recent memory, different races and Indian tribes had "ate, drank and smoked together." The last toast of the evening was one pledging "fraternal peace" among the races in the Taos Valley. (From the book) Even under the most extreme conditions our pioneer ancestors kept the festive holiday spirit alive in their hearts and frontier homes. From Lewis and Clark's first Christmas in the Rockies to the generous gift that changed a widow's and her children's lives, this book shares celebrations of the Yuletide season.

To Be or Not To Be....VEGETARIAN
PETA.ORG
Now, I don't have anything against vegetarians....some of my best friends are vegetarians....heh, heh, heh. However, when they start imposing their will on those of us who think differently.....well, hell, fire and brimstone start breaking loose! Hey folks, here's a doooooooozie of an organization!! Next time a vegetarian starts some bullshit with ya, just look at the jacket, shoes, wallet, purse or other articles in the home.......GUESS WHAT?? You'll find leather somewhere there!! What hypocrites, eh?! Why don't you people actually get a life and really do something useful for this world! You want to be a vegetarian! Fine, go graze with the cows! God put animals on this earth to eat........oh yeah, ya probably don't believe in a deity. Don't try to force your will on other people, or it will someday backfire on you! You have no concept on the management of wildlife. If wildlife was not managed by the sportsmen of this country, animals would be extremely inbred, do to the fact that they have no conscience, don't think as humans (well most humans....you folks can't seem to get it together either)! Inbreeding leads to smaller, and sicker animals due to disease. But you already should know that(yeah right!). Just another bunch of flaky cabbages with no purpose or direction in life.

It's ironic that PETA doesn't have a readily available E-MAIL address on their home page!!
WHAT?! AFRAID OF CRITICISM?! DON'T WANT NEGATIVE FEEDBACK?! DON"T WANT OTHERS TO SHARE THEIR BELIEFS?! CAN"T HANDLE THE HEAT?! ONLY WANT TO FORCE YOUR OPINIONS, AND DROWN OUT THOSE OF OTHERS?! COME ON, DARE YA TO SET UP A FEEDBACK OR DIRECT E-MAIL ON YOUR HOMEPAGE!! CHICKEN?! Opps, sorry.....that's a sore subject........AYE!?? You folks are hilarious, what a joke! All the starving people and children in this world and YOUR cause is to protect the rights of chickens! Well, got to go get me a TURKEY SANDWICH......MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!
I believe The MountainGnome will set up a poll about PETA!!

America~A Bygone Era: History: Vigalantes or Lawmen
The Bald Knobbers
Vigilantes of the Missouri Ozarks
1885 - 1892
This page is a compilation of information about the Infamous vigilante organization know as the "Bald Knobbers". Whether a Bald Knobber, Anti-Bald Knobber, Republican, Democrat, Union, or Confederate, it is a period in Ozark history that must be remembered. From the first hangings of Frank and Tubal Taylor. To the gruesome hangings of John Mathews, Bull Creek Dave, and William (Billy) Walker. With the final conclusion of the lynching of John Wesley Bright. The Bald Knobbers, created hope, freedom, despair, and uncertainty among the people of the Ozarks.

How it started:

Prior to statehood, migrating families crossed the Mississippi River to settle in the western territories. When Missouri entered the Union as a Slave state in 1821, slave-owning southerners begin immigrating, causing the first hostilities. Law and order was often days away from the settlements of these early pioneers. Many fights occurred from disagreement over land rights and morality. The Code of the hills was the excepted method to deal with conflicts, disagreements, and outright disregard for law, it was based on moral and biblical beliefs. These beliefs were enforced with methods of the times, which accounted for the only real law and order.

Good Humor Man....REASON TO CRAWL UNDER A ROCK......
LADY GOLFER....By Colleen Collins, 31 of Ferndale, MI

I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women's type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, "I think I like playing with >men's balls."

Outdoor Tip: Series on High Altitudes
Prevention of Altitude Illnesses
Basic Treatment of AMS: Moderate AMS

Moderate AMS includes severe headache that is not relieved by medication, nausea and vomiting, increasing weakness and fatigue, shortness of breath, and decreased coordination (ataxia). Normal activity is difficult, although the person may still be able to walk on their own. At this stage, only advanced medications or descent can reverse the problem. Descending even a few hundred feet (70-100 meters) may help and definite improvement will be seen in descents of 1,000-2,000 feet (305-610 meters). Twenty-four hours at the lower altitude will result in significant improvements. The person should remain at lower altitude until symptoms have subsided (up to 3 days). At this point, the person has become acclimatized to that altitude and can begin ascending again. The best test for moderate AMS is to have the person "walk a straight line" heel to toe. Just like a sobriety test, a person with ataxia will be unable to walk a straight line. This is a clear indication that immediate descent is required. It is important to get the person to descend before the ataxia reaches the point where they cannot walk on their own (which would necessitate a litter evacuation).

More on this subject next Issue........... The Portable Fish Finder
This is a great gift for the fishing enthusiast on your list. The Portable Fish Finder is a handheld fish finder that works just like the ones that are permanently mounted in boats. A handheld unit is great if you rent boats or just don't want to go to the trouble of mounting a larger unit. Just dip the transducer in the water and this unit will give you a graphic look at where the fish are. The unit will measure depth down to 120 feet. An audible tone sounds when fish are detected. This unit would be great fun even if you're not fishing.

NEWS ALERT!!
EchelonWatch
Echelon is perhaps the most powerful intelligence gathering organization in the world. Several credible reports suggest that this global electronic communications surveillance system presents an extreme threat to the privacy of people all over the world. According to these reports, ECHELON attempts to capture staggering volumes of satellite, microwave, cellular and fiber-optic traffic, including communications to and from North America. This vast quantity of voice and data communications are then processed through sophisticated filtering technologies.

This massive surveillance system apparently operates with little oversight. Moreover, the agencies that purportedly run ECHELON have provided few details as to the legal guidelines for the project. Because of this, there is no way of knowing if ECHELON is being used illegally to spy on private citizens.

5th in a series of the money controlling men who own the banks and eventually everything!!
The Council on Foreign Relations
And the Trilateral Commission

The two organizations that run the United States
By: Melvin Sickler

There are two groups of elite men and women in particular that most American people do not know about, but which are a clear threat and danger to the freedom of the American people. These are the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and the Trilateral Commission.

Right now the United States is completely under the control of those who run these two organizations (David Rockefeller in particular). It is therefore important to understand these organizations if we wish to understand what has been taking place in the United States since the early 1900’s.

The resource material I am using that explains in depth what these two organizations are all about was written by Jack Newell and Devvy Kidd ("Why A Bankrupt America?", Project Liberty, P.O. Box 741075, Arvada, CO 80006-9075). Please allow me to share the main ideas with you.

Edward Mandell House
The Council on Foreign Relations was founded in 1921 by Edward Mandell House, who had been the chief advisor of President Woodrow Wilson. Actually, he was more than just a prominent aide of the President; he dominated the President. He was referred to as Wilson’s "alter ego" (other self), and was credited for being the most powerful individual in the United States during the Wilson Administration from 1913 until 1921.

House was a Marxist whose goal was to socialize the United States. In 1912, House wrote the book "Philip Dru: Administrator" in which he stated that he was working for "Socialism as dreamed of by Karl Marx." In this book, House laid out a plan for the conquest of America, telling how both the Democratic and Republican Parties would be controlled, and be used as instruments in the creation of a socialistic government. And he asked for the establishment of a state-controlled central bank, which were both proposed in "The Communist Manifesto". And it was in 1913, during the very first year of the House-dominated Wilson Administration, that both of these proposals became law. The Federal Reserve Act was passed, which brought into power a private central bank to create the money of the United States, taking this power away from the united States Congress. And the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution, the graduated income tax as proposed by Karl Marx, was also ratified.

THE FREE MOUNTAINGNOME NEWS:

Why I Love Mom...
Submitted By: Dotty Brown of Akron, Ohio

Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mom said, "I'm tired, and it's getting late. I think I'll go to bed." She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day's lunches, rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for supper the following evening, checked the cereal box levels, filled the sugar container, put spoons and bowls on the table, and started the coffee pot for brewing the next morning. She then put some wet clothes in the dryer, put a load of clothes into the washer, and secured a loose button. She picked up the game pieces left on the table and put the telephone book back into the drawer. She watered the plants, emptied a wastebasket, and hung up a towel to dry. She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom. She stopped by the desk and wrote a note to the teacher, counted out some cash for the field trip, and pulled a textbook out from hiding under the chair. She signed a birthday card for a friend, addressed and stamped the envelope, and wrote a quick note for the grocery store. She put both near her purse. Mom then washed her face with 3-in-1 cleanser, put on her night solution and age fighting moisturizer, brushed and flossed her teeth, and filed her nails.

Dad called out, "I thought you were going to bed."

"I'm on my way," she said. She put some water into the dog's dish and put the cat outside, then made sure the doors were locked. She looked in on each of the kids and turned out their bedside lamp, hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks in the hamper, and had a brief conversation with the one child up still doing homework. In her own room, she set the alarm, laid out clothing for the next day, and straightened up the shoe rack. She added three things to her six most important things to do list. She said her prayers, and visualized the accomplishment of her goals. About that time, Dad turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular, "I'm going to bed." And he did...without another thought.

SAD BUT TRUE: by Rush Limbaugh
Submitted By: John Valdez: Raton, NM.

Whether you like Rush Limbaugh or not, this is worth reading!

I think the vast differences in compensation between the victims of the September 11th casualty, and those who die serving the country in uniform, are profound.

No one is really talking about it either because you just don't criticize anything having to do with September 11th. Well, I just can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the entitlement mentality of this country.

If you lost a family member in the September 11th attack, you're going to get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000, all the way up to $4.7 million. If you are a surviving family member of an American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable. Next, you get $1,750 for burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for each child under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt.Keep in mind that some of the people that are getting an average of $1.185 million up to $4.7 million are complaining that it's not enough.

We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims From the Oklahoma City bombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the September 11th families are getting. In addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation as well.

You see where this is going, don't you?

Folks, this is part and parcel of over 50 years entitlement politics in this country. It's just really sad. Every time when a pay raise comes up for the military they usually receive next to nothing of a raise.

Now the green machine is in combat in the Middle East while their families have to survive on food stamps and live in low rent housing. However our own US Congress just voted themselves a raise, and many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress once to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month and most are now equal to be millionaires plus. They also do not receive Social Security on retirement because they didn't have to pay into the system. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7 they may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed them in harms way receive a pension of $15,000 per month. I would like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who are now fighting.

"When do we finally do something about this??" If this doesn't seem fair to you, it is time to forward this to as many people as you can.

TIPS FOR MEN ~ WOMEN and BABIES

GUYS: Guy Guide To The Differences Between The Sexes
How a Guy Can Impress a Woman:
Compliment her, cuddle her, kiss her, caress her, hug her, love her, comfort her, protect her, wine and dine her, buy things for her, listen to her, care for her, support her, go to the ends of the earth for her.

GALS: Cherries For Health
George Washington may have made the cherry tree famous, but he probably didn't know that the ripe red fruit is packed full of healthful benefits.

Cherries contain a compound called "perillyl alcohol," shown to be effective against mammary cancer in lab animals. Some human experimentation in similar cancer treatments is now going on and is showing promise. The University of Wisconsin is doing the research.

Using cherries as part of a daily diet might possibly help ward off some types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, lungs, stomach, liver and skin. Cherries also contain vitamins C and E, and the most benefits seem to come from eating them raw, since cooking destroys some of their nutrients.

BEAUTY: Quick Hair Fix
Want to look your best but don't have time to do your hair in the morning? Here's a little tip for setting up a "good hair day." First, wet your hair during your morning shower and dry with an absorbent towel. (I recommend a good five minutes of strong circular movements.) While your hair is still damp, spray on a soft-setting lotion or vitamin hair lotion. (Avoid those sticky, hard, alcohol-based lotions.)

Now go back to toweling your hair, until you have a fuller, dryer look. Style your hair with your fingers and let your locks dry naturally while you get ready. Et voila! Easy to manage, healthy-looking hair that looks like a professional prepped it!

PC SOFTWARE / FREEWARE
Making A Square Image :
Are you using a digital camera to take pictures that end up on a Web site or sent to others via e-mail? Or perhaps you just scan pictures taken by your trusty 35 MM camera. In either case, you could use a nice little freeware program called A Square Image.

A Square Image converts any of your JPG or BMP files to a smaller (and square) image for use in e-mail or on your Web site. As an example, suppose you'd like to send your sister in Washington a photo of your new baby but you find that the file is huge. You can load this big file into A Square Image and convert it to a square 512 x 512 picture suitable for e-mail.

TIP: Frying Tip
A simple technique can help prevent breaded (or battered) foods from sticking when preparing them in a basket-type fryer (like Fry Daddy). When the oil has reached the desired temperature, partially submerge the food item (holding it with tongs away from the sides and bottom) in the oil for10 seconds before releasing it to cook. This sets the coating and makes it less likely to adhere to the fryer's basket.

Cooking Websites: Recipes
Although it might be premature to call anything on the web "classic", there are several sites I keep returning to over the years. Epicurious (epicurious.com) has excellent feature articles plus the Bon Appetit and Gourmet recipe archives. The Food Network site (foodtv.com ) is a great page, especially when used with the television shows. Recipe Source (recipesource.com) is the best site to find many versions of the same recipe.

If you have a favorite recipe or a great cooking website, and you'd like to share it with our readers, you can send it to The MountainGnome. Send your specialty to my_recipe@mountaingnome.com
