It's time to CELEBRATE! : As we count down to that menacing date in history, we are reminded of the Roman festivals observed between the Ides of February and the Ides of March. Click for Boncarbo, Colorado Forecast Just last week the Romans would have observed their Lupercalia, Click Here For Large Image! believed by some to have been named for the Sabine god, Februus, the Purifier, to celebrate Purification on February 16. During this festival, runners beat women with leather straps called februa in the belief that the act would make a barren woman fertile. Known as an endotercisus day, the morning, known as the dies fasti, was set aside for the celebration of the Lupercal, while the evening, called the dies nefasti, belonged to the Quirinalia. This was a day sacred to both Mars and Juno. MORE.... Subscribe To The Mountaingnome-Today! The Internets Answer To Variety and FUN!! Free E-mail Newsletter - Outdoor and Beyond....

 MOUNTAINGNOMES ~ THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Ridin' the Rails: Blue Ridge Scenic Railway:
Georgia
There is something romantic about an approaching train moving along the tracks. The sight of it and the sounds your hear will surely bring back a memory or two.
The original main line was built to Murphy, North Carolina, which was reached in late 1886. The builders intended to continue until they reached Knoxville, Tennessee, but in 1887, the plans were changed as Knoxville and Blue Ridge were ultimately connected via a slightly different but much more exciting route via the Hiawassee River gorge.

The Grand Gulch Copper Mine is located in the Arizona Strip District. Mining began at Grand Gulch in the 1885. The average grade of the ore was 15% copper, but ran as high as 50% copper. As many as 80 men were employed at the mine at one time. The site included a rock bunkhouse and a rock cookhouse. Mining continued until 1918. A fire in the 1950's claimed most of the mine buildings, leaving only stone walls.

NEWS REVIEW:
US Attorney To Probe Rich Pardon

By PAT MILTON, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Federal prosecutors have opened an investigation into President Clinton (news - web sites)'s last-minute pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich, a source familiar with the case said Wednesday.
U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White in New York ``is trying to determine if there was a transfer of money to buy the pardon,'' the source told The Associated Press, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
In a statement issued through a spokeswoman Wednesday night, Clinton said: ``As I have said repeatedly, I made the decision to pardon Marc Rich based on what I thought was the right thing to do.''

Nix the alcohol while you're pregnant:
Steering clear of alcohol may be easy if, like many women, you develop a dislike for the stuff early on in your pregnancy. But if you tend to use alcohol to unwind, giving it up may require more effort. Experiment with replacing that glass of chardonnay with other stress-reducing pleasures such as a warm bath, soft music, a massage, exercise, or reading. If you miss the ritual of drinking, try replacing that Bloody Mary with a virgin variety or switch to nonalcoholic beer or wine during your evening meal. If your partner enjoys a drink after work, consider asking him to abstain for a time so you won't feel so deprived.
NOTE: Always Check with and follow the advice of your Physician!

When to give your baby a bath:
You'll want to stick to sponge baths with a lukewarm washcloth for the first week or so, until your baby's umbilical cord stump falls off and the area heals. After that you need to bathe a newborn only once or twice a week. (Babies just don't get that dirty until they start crawling around.) Use a soft soap and don't fill the tub too much -- a few inches is all you need.
NOTE! Always check with and follow the advice of your physician!!
