Flowering Cactus:
My grandson Bobby came running into the house the other day, very excited. "Hey grampa, come look at the pretty flowers we found on the cactus". Sure enough, the cactus are in bloom. Cactus of sorts is plentiful around here. These are some of the prettiest specimens that I've seen. We hope you enjoy them!

A Sad Farewell & Tribute: Elsie Pastuszynski
Last week, a very special woman pasted away. The reason she was so special: She gave me one of her beautiful daughters, to be my wife. She was always fun and full of life, and I loved her like my own mother. Almost five years ago, the woman of my life was taken from us, in an automobile accident. In the twinkling of an eye, your world, your life, your attitudes, your beliefs, your dreams, are sent through a tornado and destroyed. You realize nothing will ever be the same again, and you have to learn to cope with reality. So, from all of us, who knew and loved both of these beautiful women: The Cactus Flowers Bloomed for You!!
Folks, choose well the words, you leave with loved ones. Always make them kind and loving, so that when a loved one does leave, instead of saying.."I wish I had....", you'll be able to say..."I'm glad I did....".

 Sundown.........by: Bob Jones    Wed. 07 June 2000

Davis Station Antarctica:
Greetings from Davis.
The sun set at Davis on 02 June and what a magnificent finale it was. At about 10.30am the sky in the NE turned a deep orange red and following this clouds all over the sky turned pink. The colour in the NE remained until about 1.30pm when the sun rose above the horizon. We only saw about 2/3 of the orb and it finally dropped below the horizon at 2pm. Soon afterwards the NW sky went orange red. It was completely dark with stars in the sky at 4pm but low down on the horizon in the NW it was still clear. The sun is due back on 10 July. The final setting was cause for a celebration. We were asked to wear black to the party, which everyone did except for Frederic Jobin who always wears black, so Fred turned up dressed in white. Mick Briscoe prepared a magnificent spread. Following this we adjourned to the lounge to listen to the Davis Band. The Davis 2000 song, composed and sung by Jack Gilbert was played and heard for the first time.

One of the greatest single pleasures in winter is food and chef, Mick Briscoe continues to do an excellent job with Saturday dinners and Wine Club nights being special. Fresh produce is supplied daily from the hydroponics garden. Sunday cook, Peter Thompson maintained the high standard of cuisine serving Guinness beef with dumplings and bread and butter pudding a la Grand Marnier.

The Davis 2000 web site, produced by Frederic Jobin is on the www, check it out on: http://www.antdiv.gov.au/stations/davis/index.html

With the last glass coffee plunger broken, Bob Jones requested an expeditioner-proof coffee plunger. Brett Hill took up the challenge and manufactured a magnificent stainless steel and brass 6 cup plunger.

With less than 2 weeks to midwinter; Darren Harpur is busily designing and making the menus, Jack Gilbert and Darren have produced the invitation and these will be sent out soon and Rob Sharp has written the midwinter pantomime. Two readings of the pantomime, under the direction of Robin Tihema, have already taken place behind closed doors.

Talk About Dumb..First Attempt
Renton, Washington:
A man in Renton, Washington decided to commit his very first crime, a robbery. He did not survive the attempt, however. The man stepped around a marked police car and entered H&J Leather & Firearms. After passing by the uniform police officer, the man announced his intentions and fired a few shots. The officer and the store's clerk both fired on the man, fatally wounding him.

Summer Adventure:  Mauna Loa Summit Cabin: Snow in Hawaii.....You Bet!!
Mauna Loa summit cabin after a spectacular lightening and snow storm.

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution — processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture.

The park encompasses 230,000 acres and ranges from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities.

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK will present a special day in celebration of Hawaii's unique island heritage. A cultural festival is set for Saturday, July 8th, 2000. Participants can sit back and enjoy Hawaiian music and hula, join in hands-on instructions in native crafts and games, and observe demonstrations of island arts and traditions.

Survival Tip:Use signalling devices:
Blowing a whistle, lighting a fire and staying visible will help searchers find you. Help searchers find you even if you are embarrassed or afraid. Remember that animals will not be attracted to your signals. Searchers may also use planes or helicopters - make yourself visible to them. Three of anything - for example three whistle blasts, three fires, or three gunshots - is an internationally recognized distress signal.
Until next time: Be Safe ~ Be Happy!!

AOL Says Hackers Broke Into Some Member Accounts:
(Reuters) - America Online Inc. said vandals had broken into its AOL service and gained access to an undisclosed number of member accounts, highlighting the vulnerability of even the world's largest Internet services provider to the threat of hacker attacks. The software virus attack appeared to be similar in kind, but by no means in scale, to the "ILOVEYOU" virus that temporarily paralyzed tens of millions of computers last month.

 BABYGNOMES DAYKARE CENTER

Baby Corner
Your home on the web for support, infor- mation and tools necessary to help you through pregnancy and the first years of your baby's life. . .

Start Sleeping on Your Left Side:
Your newly tender breasts may make it hard for you to find a comfortable sleeping position, especially if you're used to sleeping on your stomach. Your first trimester is the perfect time to start training yourself to sleep on your left side to improve the flow of blood and nutrients to your fetus and uterus and help your kidneys get rid of waste and fluids. The sooner you get used to this position, the better you'll be able to sleep when your belly is bulging.
NOTE: Always follow the advice of your Physician!

Babies and Aspirin Don't Mix:
Never give your baby medications containing aspirin. Aspirin can make children susceptible to Reye's syndrome -- a rare but potentially fatal illness. Don't assume that the children's medicines you find in the store will be aspirin-free. Read the label carefully to make sure.
NOTE! Always check with and follow the advice of your physician!!

 MOUNTAINGNOMES' FAMILY TREE NEWS

WAGON TRAINS WEST:
Wagon masters often kept diaries and records, which were later donated to local genealogical societies. Newspapers in towns along the trail--such as Omaha, Kearney, and Ogallala, Nebraska--announced the arrival of wagon trains.
Web sites can assist you in finding wagon train trails, records, and artifacts. One site you may want to check out is http://www.pbs.org/trailofhope/stories.html

Wagon trains associated with specific churches might be recorded in church records in the town of arrival or departure. For instance, a Catholic priest of Garryowen Parish, Dubuque County, Iowa, led a wagon train West during the Gold Rush. Lists of the members who accompanied him are recorded in the church diocese records in Dubuque.
