MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING

10 Steps to a Tack Driver
By Ron Spomer

Turning a so-so shooter into a MOA rifle might be easier than you think.

So you finally bought that rifle you’ve been lusting after all these years. Or maybe you inherited one from your uncle. But it’s not living up to your daydreams, not exactly shooting lights out.

Well then, tweak it.

More precisely, accurize it.

Webster’s doesn’t recognize accurize as a word, but shooters know it instantly. It describes the process of turning that so-so shooter into a tack driver. And ordinary Joes such as you and I can do it.

Before messing with the hardware, define accuracy for your needs. Realistically, how accurate a deer rifle do you need? Two MOA will suffice out to 300 yards. Really. If your rifle consistently puts all shots inside a 2-inch circle at 100 yards, that means it will put each shot no more than 1 inch from where you aim at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards, 3 inches at 300 yards. The average deer’s chest/vital area is at least 10 inches in diameter. Aim for its center, and you aren’t going to miss if your bullet lands 3 inches from where you aimed. But of course, no real marksman wants to settle for a 2-MOA gun of any stripe. Coyote, woodchuck and prairie dog hunters shoot at 2- to 6-inch vital zones. Sometimes those tiny targets are 1,000 yards away. For this, 1 MOA is not good enough, and one-half MOA barely makes the grade. So you set your level of accuracy. Now let’s review how to achieve it.

Putting Meat On The Table:
Investarm Gemmer Hawken

The Investarm Gemmer Hawken is the younger brother to the Bridger Hawken. The Gemmer Hawken features a more traditional solid wood stock with black furnishings and features a 32” blued barrel with a 1:60” twist rate. The slower twist rate of the Gemmer Hawken allows it to perform extremely well with round balls. The Gemmer Hawken is available in both percussion and flintlock ignitions with build-it-yourself kit options for each. It also is available in .45, .50, and .54 caliber options for additional diversity. Similar to the Bridger Hawken, the Investarm Gemmer Hawken is available with a left-handed configuration in both the pre-assembled and kit versions.

The rifle carried across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains by western pioneers and trappers was the pinnacle of the modern percussion firearms development of the mid-nineteenth century. Originally designed and built by such famous makers as Hawken, Gemmer and Demick, the Gemmer Hawken Rifle represents durable design in a big bore caliber with plenty of knockdown power. No other factory assembled rifle offers the authentic style and design of Investarm's Gemmer Hawken Rifle.

The Hawken rifle was originally produced by brothers Jacob and Samuel Hawken, in their St. Louis, Missouri shop founded in 1815. The earliest known record of a Hawken rifle dates back to 1823 when one was custom made for William Henry Ashley, a gun powder manufacturer turned fur trader, who used it in his expeditions up the Missouri river to the interior of the Western United States. Ashley and his men are credited with the creation of the rendezvous system, in which Native Americans and trappers would meet to trade goods, money and furs.

The Hawken brothers custom made each one of their rifles by hand. This attention to detail gained Hawken rifles a reputation for both durability and long-range accuracy. A number of famous men are said to have owned Hawken rifles, including Auguste Lacome, Hugh Glass, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Joseph Meek, Jedediah Strong Smith and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1864 the Hawken Shop was purchased by J.P. Gemmer, a longtime employee, who held true to tradition and maintained the "Hawken" quality until the shop closed in 1915. Our reproduction maintains the integrity of many of the original features of the Hawken rifle, while integrating modern technology for today’s shooter. Historically, these guns were .50 or .54 caliber with octagonal barrels of 33 to 36 inches. The hardwood stocks had a curved cheek piece, double-set triggers and front blade sights with furniture and butt plates fashioned from iron. Our reproduction integrates these classic features with a lighter 32-inch barrel, blackened hardware and modern precision manufacturing of all component parts.

This Classic Plains Hawken offers legendary high-quality features such as a 32" barrel with 1 in 60" twist rate for patched ball hunting loads, double set triggers and Hawken style percussion "snail" with clean-out screw. The rifle includes a separate ramrod entry thimble and nose cap, and reliable coil spring lock with correct lock plate. The Investarm™ Gemmer Hawken Rifle is available in .45 to .54 caliber and flintlock or percussion configurations. The Investarm™ Gemmer Hawken Rifle is an attractive, traditional muzzleloader that is rugged, well built and meant to last a lifetime.

14 Deer Hunting Myths Even Experienced Hunters Believe
By Josh Honeycutt

Warning: Get your brushes out. This article may ruffle a few feathers:

There are myths out there in every facet of the world. And the deer hunting realm is no exception. The number of myths out there are many. And the deception is real. I’ll readily admit that I’ve believed in several of these at some point in my life. But education corrected my flawed perceptions, and I’m a better and more knowledgeable deer hunter and steward because of it. So I ask you, have you ever fallen victim to one of these tall tales?

4.) Myth: There Are Only a Handful of Whitetail Subspecies.

The truth of the matter is we don’t know for certain exactly how many subspecies there are. A lot of those differentiations between subspecies come from geographical features and other factors. But the number most experts side with is 38 subspecies in the continental U.S

COMFORT FOOD

Recipe: E. Smith’s Roast Pork
from The Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant

George and Martha Washington welcomed thousands of guests to Mount Vernon and were well known for their boundless hospitality, frequent and memorable parties, and the wide variety of culinary treats served. This was only possible because of the work of enslaved butlers, housemaids, waiters, cooks, and others. Explore recipes and learn more about food culture at Mount Vernon.

Livestock of all kinds was raised on George Washington’s outlying farms. His farm reports list hogs at Dogue Run and Muddy Hole, for instance; they generally were butchered in early December.

E. Smith, whose recipe is adapted here by culinary historian Nancy Carter Crump, recommended applesauce as an accompaniment.
    Ingredients:
  • 1 boneless pork loin (4 to 5 pounds)
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried marjoram
  • 2 cups fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • About 1/3 cup lard or vegetable shortening, melted and cooled, plus more as needed
  • Applesauce for serving

  • Preparation Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 500°F. Set a rack in a roasting pan.
  • Rinse and dry the pork loin. Using a very sharp paring knife, carefully remove any silver skin and excess fat from the surface. Rub salt, pepper, and marjoram all over the loin.
  • Using the same paring knife or another very sharp knife, make 1 1/2- to 2-inch-deep slits along surface of the loin, about 1 1/2 inches apart, being careful not to cut all the way through the loin.
  • Combine the breadcrumbs with the sage, lemon zest, nutmeg, parsley, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the egg and butter, mixing together thoroughly. Using your fingers, push the stuffing into the slits, packing loosely. (Any remaining stuffing can be pressed over the surface of the loin to create a delicious crusty topping.) Place the pork in the roasting pan. Carefully pour the lard over the meat.
  • Roast the pork for about 5 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 400°F and roast for another 30 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F, and continue roasting, basting occasionally with the drippings or additional melted lard, for 2 to 2 1/2 hours to an internal temperature of about 150°F. When the pork is done, the juices will run clear when it is pierced with a fork. Remove the loin to a carving board, cover loosely with aluminum foil, and set aside to rest for about 15 minutes before slicing.
  • Cut the loin into slices as desired, arrange on a platter, and serve with Applesauce.

  • Serves 6-8

MUZZLELOADER FORUMS WE AVOID:
Muzzleloader forums are usually a great source of friendship and a wealth of knowledge not only for beginners, but also the experienced shooter/hunter/sportsman. Usually you will find a variety of threads on many subjects involving muzzleloading, hunting, period clothing, and accessories. Usually there is also a thread for buying, selling, and wanted products.

Unfortunately there are too many sites that really have no interest in the muzzleloading sport other than to make money! They will develope various threads that you have to pay to enter and post on!! We usually avoid those sites as they are there just for profit. A muzzleloading should provide you with everything you need to be proficient in your endeavors, wether it be just shooting, hunting, rendezvous, and other related endeavors you seek. Also on the pay site, you will find a lot of rash, gestapo, type moderators that just look for excuses to shame and/or ban members for trivial things that they have a personal dislike for!!

NOW REMEMBER: Not all pay sites are like that, but there are far too many!

We belong to many forums and we will join many more to review for our readers. Below we list those WE avoid andthose WE find to be enjoyable.
The rest is up to your discretion. These are strictly our opinions.
