MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING

Muzzleloader Tune-up
By Ralph M. Lermayer

To protect a scope from corrosive blowback, wrap electrical tape around the area just above the breech.

To the uninitiated, muzzleloaders are veiled in a cloak of mystery. To hunters who understand them, blackpowder rifles are simple and predictable in operation.

What they are NOT is forgiving. Pay attention to the rules, and they will never let you down. Ignore them, and they’ll quit you like a politician’s promise.

Here are some tips to keep your frontstuffers shooting.

Sidelocks:
Most sidelocks were designed to ignite with small No. 11 percussion caps. To up the performance and reliability, unscrew the nipple and replace it with one that will accept bigger, hotter musket caps or 209 shotgun primers. Check the Dixie Gun Works catalog or website to get the right thread replacement nipple for your rifle. This one step will stop most sidelock misfires, and costs under $10.

Inlines
Most blackpowder hunters use a modern, fast-twist inline muzzleloader. Keep them purring with these tips:

Breechplugs
Removable breechplugs allow thorough and easy cleaning. The problem is, they don’t always cooperate. They become stuck, sometimes impossible to get out. When the rifle is new, go over the breechplug threads with fine emery cloth to smooth them and remove all burrs.

Stainless is notorious for burrs. Coat the plug threads liberally with anti-seize paste available at auto parts stores. Remove, clean and recoat the threads after every 20 to 30 shots. Never put the gun up for the season without treating the breechplug threads.

To remove a really stuck breechplug, put a spent cap over the nipple, hammer down on the cap, and set the rifle muzzle-up on a newspaper in the garage (it will leak). Then put an inch or two of penetrating oil down the bore and leave it overnight. The breechplug should break loose by morning.

Putting Meat On The Table:
T/C Triumph Bone Collector

Thompson Center has long been known for producing some of the best muzzleloaders around and their Triumph line is one of their best selling models (no disrespect at all to the Thompson Center Pro Hunter FX, which is also a great muzzleloader). Though Jim Shockey is one of the most famous hunters who uses T/C muzzleloaders, this particular model has a stamp of approval from Michael Waddell.

The T/C Triumph Bone Collector has all the same features as other T/C Triumph muzzleloaders: a 28″ fluted barrel, a Weather Shield finish for corrosion resistance, and an easy to remove breech plug. However, the Bone Collector also incorporates black traction grip panels on the forend, a great recoil pad, and what T/C calls a “Flex Tech” stock. Thompson Center claims that the stock compresses slightly during recoil and can reduce felt recoil by 43%.

So, if you want a rugged and accurate muzzleloader with reduced recoil, even when shooting magnum loads, then you should really check out the Thompson Center Triumph Bone Collector.

Losing The Right To Hunt ......
by Toby bridges

We're closer to losing all opportunities to hunt than many of you may realize. There are many people ... anti-hunting organizations ... and state, federal and global agencies which are hell bent to eliminate hunting. And, yes, some of those "agencies" include a number of so-called "Game & Fish" departments. How they are accomplishing a well funded effort to put an end to hunting just may surprise you. This article shares a look at a new 2022 website which aims to counter the efforts and lies of that anti-hunting movement.

10 Deer Hunting Myths Debunked

Misconceptions:

A talking head on outdoor TV puffs his chest and declares, “Man, the full moon is the worst time to hunt!” Sounds pretty good, and you buy it. Your daddy told you never to overhunt a spot, and you never doubt Pops. Stands to reason that if another hunter tromps too close to your treestand, your day is ruined, right?

Uh, no, to all three of the above. Let’s change your thinking on some misguided beliefs about big deer and how to hunt them.

6.) A full moon is the worst time to hunt.
Old-timers have preached it for years: “Them deer can see so good in the big moon, they stay up all night eating and don’t move a-tall in the day.” It’s bewildering to me that millions of hunters still think that way.

Numerous studies of whitetails have established historical rut curves that document one indisputable fact: In any year, from Virginia to Kansas to Canada, 90% of adult does will come into estrus and be bred from Nov. 5 to Nov. 20, regardless of moon phase.

I get that and I don’t contend that the full moon determines the timing of the rut. But based on 30 years of observing and hunting whitetails for a living across North America, I do believe — no, I know — that the five or six days during and around the “rutting” moon in November can be a great time to hunt.

In a study conducted a few years ago at North Carolina State, researchers tracked GPS-collared deer throughout the four moon phases and analyzed text messages sent from the collars to determine when and how the animals moved. Summing up their findings, a scientist said, “A common misconception is that deer can see better at night because it’s brighter when the moon is full. But according to our data they actually move less on average at night during a full moon and more during the middle of the day, and also earlier in the evenings.”

Bingo. Over the last three decades I cannot tell you how many mature bucks I have seen on their feet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during full-moon days in November. I add that early-morning deer movement has been light to nonexistent on these days.

The full moon this November is the 19th. I predict you might catch a good buck prowling for or chasing does any day from the 15th through the 21st if you time your hunts right. Early mornings will be tough; spend as much time in a stand as you can from midmorning until dark.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES ~ SKILLS

Do-It-Yourself: Build A Muzzleloader
By Reid Coffield
It was back in the 1970s, and there was a lot of interest in traditional muzzleloading firearms. I had a gunsmith shop in the foothills of western North Carolina, and at the time, it was just about the only shop catering to blackpowder shooters in that part of the state. Needless to say, I saw a lot of muzzleloaders.

Every year around February or March, two or three guys would come in with long boxes that usually held most of the components of a partially completed muzzleloading rifle. More often than not, the kit had been a Christmas gift.

The quality of these kits was just about always at the bottom of the barrel. At the time, that was saying a lot because there were some really poor quality kits being sold. I saw bores that were only partially rifled, barrels with off-center bores, kits missing major components, and stocks made of material that would've embarrassed an orange crate.

In most cases, my business partner Wayne Spears and I were able to salvage enough parts to put together a reasonably decent rifle, and the customers always seemed pleased. I've often wondered how many of those guns were later proudly exhibited as the handiwork of the owner.

Safari 15 bug exposes your search history and personal identifiers to websites
by Danka Delić

A fingerprinting and fraud detection service, FingerprintJS, has recently discovered and described a bug in Safari 15 that can track browsing activities and even reveal your identity to websites. Everyone using the latest version of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, as well as the Safari browser users, is at risk of data leaks.

About the bug:

The Safari 15 bug originates from Apple's implementation of JavaScript API, called IndexedDB. The implementation, however, violates the same-origin policy of IndexedDB – a principal security mechanism that restricts documents and scripts from one origin to interact with resources from another. This results in the bug allowing one website to access a database of another website, whereas in normal conditions, this should never be the case. As a rule, indexed databases each have a separate origin, and documents and scripts of one origin should never be able to access different origin databases.
