All Things Southern
WHAT SOUTHERN MOMS TELL THEIR DAUGHTERS…A friend's mother gave her this piece of advice on her wedding night: Honey, when you're late with supper, or just plain tired, remember to have the Holy Trinity of Southern cooking (onions, celery and bell pepper) sautéing in a dab of butter or bacon grease when your man comes home--it'll put him in a good mood and you can feed him anything.
Shellie Rushing Tomlinson (author of Lessons Learned on Bull Run Road) wants your southern mom's advice about love, marriage, relationships and life in general.
Write to Shellie at tomtom@bayou.com to have your mom's advice memorialized in her new book WHAT SOUTHERN MOMS TELL THEIR DAUGHTERS.

Indian Lore & Tradition: The Gecko Lizard
Click for Boncarbo, Colorado Forecast Five species of geckos live in the United States. Geckos are the only lizards that can produce sounds - other lizards are voiceless. Most species of geckos have sticky toe pads which enable them to cling to smooth surfaces, either vertically or upside down, defying the force of gravity. Other species found in sand dunes and deserts have toes with fringed scales which allow them to move swiftly across sand without sinking.

YES....IT'S REALLY FACT
Is Dr. Ruth really a trained killer?
When she was a young woman, sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer once lived in Israel. There, she was a trained sniper. She was so adept at handling a Sten gun - a British submachine gun - that she could quickly assemble one while blindfolded.
  • I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older, then it dawned on me . . .they're cramming for their final exam.
Talk About Cute.... A young family moved into a house next door to a vacant lot. One day a construction crew turned up to build a house on the lot. The family's six-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door. She hung around and eventually the construction workers adopted her as a kind of mascot. They chatted to her and gave her little jobs to do and at the end of the week presented her with a pay envelope containing a dollar. She took this home to her mother, who said all the appropriate words of admiration and suggested that they take it to the bank the next morning to deposit it in her account. When they went to the bank, the teller was equally impressed, and asked the little girl how she had come by her earnings."I've been building a house this week," she replied proudly. "Goodness!" said the teller. "And will you be building a house next week, too?" "Yes," answered the little girl. "If we ever get the f××king two-by-fours."

Outdoor Adventure: Chiricahua National Monument
Chiricahua National Monument comprises 12,000 acres in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona. These volcanic mountains rise above the surrounding grasslands to elevations ranging between 5,100 and 7,800 feet.

The 18-square-mile Monument is a mecca for hikers and birders. At the intersection of the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts, and the southern Rocky Mountains and northern Sierra Madre in Mexico, Chiricahua plants and animals represent one of the premier areas for biological diversity in the northern hemisphere. Mountain Events Steamboat Springs, Co.
The Best Of The West
If you've been in Steamboat for even a short spell, you'll hear the story - though it is hard to believe - that when Swede Carl Howelsen first arrived in Steamboat Springs in 1913, he and his fellow Nordic types piled snow high on the uphill side of an ordinary outhouse to create the valley's first ski jump.

The surprise is, the story is true. Before there was a ski industry here, there were pioneer skiers. And you can get a sense of the difference between pioneers and those who followed when you visit the Tread of Pioneers Museum at 800 Oak St, at the corner of 8th. There in the wing devoted to the artifacts of local ski history lie the ski-jumping boots Howelsen once used, with pictures of his early daredevilry. No space-age foam-and-plastic here. We're talking supple, high-top leather lace-up boots. With boards more than 12 feet long Howelsen flew over the slopes below today's Colorado Mountain College, before he settled on the west side of Emerald Mountain, today known as Howelsen Hill.

Survival Tip: Flash Flood Warning
When camping along a river, always take care to pitch your tent or unroll your sleeping bag on a high point that will not be inundated with water should heavy overnight rains send a flash flood your way. This happens more often than you might think, especially out west, where dry, rocky canyons don't absorb water, but rather send it raging downstream. Also, if your traveling via river, make sure that your boat is secure and that gear is not lying precariously close to the river. Until next time: Be Safe ~ Be Happy!!

U.S. Encryption Policy
On January 14, 2000 the U.S. government published new encryption export regulations [.pdf] [.txt] in the Federal Register that represent a fundamental change in U.S. policy. The new regulations, to go into affect immediately upon publication, make it much easier for companies and individuals in the United States to widely export strong encryption in common products regardless of their strength or the type of technology they use. The regulations implement the policy announcement on encryption made by the White House in September 1999. More.....

 GNOMES' NEWS and VIEWS

NEWS REVIEW:

Zero tolerance begins at home - Killings criminal, not racial
Finally, in Toronto, the unmentionable is being mentioned -- that black people are killing black people, and something has to be done about it. It is not a racial thing, it's a crime thing. Even Dudley Laws, the black activist, more known for outrage when cops shoot a black person, is -- courageously -- tackling black-on-black violence and homicides: Over 100 such killings since 1996, and six so far this July. In the past, police have gotten into trouble and been accused of racism if they linked race with crime. That attitude, and policy, has to change.

U.S. weighs new Iraqi strike
10,000-18,000 Iraqi commandos ready to cross Jordan to strike Israel
Source: STRATFOR, DEBKA
As I have been warning about time and time and time and time again, the West is being lured into a trap by our enemies-of-old for nuclear annihilation. The Middle East is the trigger point for the war of wars, that which is prophesized about in The Bible's Book of Revelation. The trigger man for this conflict, via launching a chemical SCUD missile attack on Israel, is most likely Saddam Hussein. This, at least, is what I believe God has shown to me. No one seems to heed the warnings I feel I've been called upon to give because ...

Early contractions -- what to do:
Many women have early contractions, which can sometimes be caused by dehydration. If you're having early or irregular contractions, slow down and drink two or more glasses of water or juice. It's also a good idea to empty your bladder. Lie down on your left side to relieve some of the pressure on your uterus. If you're noticing a pattern to your contractions -- you're having them at regular intervals or you're having more than four to six an hour -- you should be evaluated by your physician or midwife.
NOTE: Always Check with and follow the advice of your Physician!

Your baby's vision:
Babies should also be screened for vision problems regularly, starting at birth and continuing at every doctor visit. Pediatricians and ophthalmologists can usually correct most eye deficiencies if they're spotted early enough; the older your child gets, the harder it will be to fix any problems.
NOTE! Always check with and follow the advice of your physician!!
