Visitors:
You know folks, some visitors can really rattle ya! We had just one them type of visitors! Up here in the mountains, one never knows what he/she will find outside the door. A couple years back, I was havin' a nice refreshin' cup of coffee, in the morning. Looked out my kitchen winder' and was face to face, with a nice size, cinnamon color, brown bear. The bear was after the dog food in the barrel. I didn't bother him and he didn't bother me! This morning I found a vulture, at the end of my drive, perched atop a dead carcass. Sheeshh, no class!
As I was saying, here's the little guys that can really rattle ya! The boys found him snoozing outside the back door. Now, myself, I ain't got no use fer rattle snakes....especially with little Bobby playin' outside! This bad boy not only departed....it is now one of the departed! Come on back and we'll try to have some nice wildlife to show ya!
Stop by again next week for another drive through the mountains!

Talk About Dumb.... Ann Arbor:
The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 7:50am, flashed a gun and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away.

 NEWS and VIEWS

I received a reply to last issues article about statistics in Australia, after guns were banned.
The gentleman noted that many Australians were buying large plastic tubes, to encase, and bury their firearms. Folks, that is like calling the fire department after the house has burned to the ground! Scenario: you are being robbed/beaten/raped etc., you tell the intruder..."excuse me, can you wait until I dig up my weapon, so that I may protect myself/my family/my property/my dignity?" Yes, I would also rather bury my firearms than give them up to fools! However, now in Australia, if you defend yourself with a firearm, even if it prevents you or your family from being killed......YOU ARE NOW THE CRIMINAL!! Make sense??? Use your right to vote, while you still can!!

Are cravings a sign of pregnancy:
If you're extremely tuned in to your body's rhythms, you may begin to suspect you're pregnant soon after conception. But most women won't experience any pregnancy symptoms until the fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine wall several days after conception. Others may feel no different for weeks and begin to wonder only when they miss a period. Sure it's a cliché, but food cravings sometimes can be a sign of pregnancy. Don't rely on them as a sure symptom (it may be all in your head, or even a sign that your body is low on a particular nutrient), but if cravings are accompanied by other symptoms like darkened nipples, fatigue, and swollen breasts, you might want to start looking for an OB or midwife.
NOTE: Always follow the advice of your Physician!

Don't wait to poison-proof:
Children, especially very young ones, discover the world by putting things in their mouth. Not all hazardous substances are obvious. For children under 6, the number-one killer is iron pills. Lock up all medications. Here are some other tips to keep your baby safe: Know who to call in case of a poisoning and post the number near your phone. Don't trust child-resistant containers. Keep medicines, pesticides, even detergents in their original containers -- if a child does accidentally ingest a poison, you'll know where it came from.
NOTE! Always check with and follow the advice of your physician!!

 MOUNTAINGNOMES' FAMILY TREE NEWS

THE ORPHAN TRAINS:
One of the most remarkable phenomena in history took place in the late 1800's and early 1900's--the orphan trains from the East Coast to the western sections of America. At the time, the streets of New York were full of orphaned children or runaways. Crime was rampant and many people felt that the children could do better if they were given the chance to be adopted by families out West (sometimes only as far as Illinois or Nebraska).

Search the Internet for information on the orphan trains. There are several indexes that contain names of children who were sent West. Sometimes the children stayed with a family for only a short time before they moved on. Often the adoptions didn't turn out well and children were treated as slaves. However, there were adoptions that turned out extremely well. Many lawyers, doctors, and even governors were orphan train children.

The orphan train trail is sometimes difficult to trace; it helps to know where the person you're researching ended up. Check for newspapers announcing the arrival of orphan trains in cities and towns along the railroad routes. Another good source of information is the Orphan Train Collection, located at: http://pda.republic.net/othsa/

DILL POTATO SALAD:
Serves 4-6
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 green onions, chopped, including tops
  • 1/2 cup sliced celery
  • 1/2 cup sliced dill pickles
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

    Dressing:

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, whipped
Boil potatoes in salted water. Cool; sprinkle with salt and pepper and set aside.

Dressing: Combine sugar, mustard, salt, and flour. In a small saucepan, heat vinegar with butter until butter melts; slowly add to flour mixture. Blend until very smooth. Add garlic.

Put the egg yolk in the top of a double boiler; stir in vinegar mixture. Place over hot--boiling--water and cook, stirring, until mixture thickens. Cool slightly; blend in whipped cream. While warm, pour over cubed potatoes.

Add onion, celery, dill pickle, and parsley. Toss to blend thoroughly, then chill.

So until next time, REMEMBER:  How can you be ALONE with somebody? Think about it...
