 Greetings from Davis........by: Bob Jones

Davis Station Antarctica:
This week in Davis started off with the monthly medicals which amongst other things, confirmed that a few of us have been enjoying Mick's kitchen magic just a little too much! As we've been putting on the kilos the Elephant Seals have been shedding it, and combined with the ever thickening sea ice, has signalled the end of the moulting season and their subsequent return to sea. One by one they have gradually begun fanning out across the ice in search of open water reducing in numbers by the day. A sign from nature that winter will soon be upon us. (Although I suspect it may not have been the sea ice which forced them from our shores but the constant playing of 'Santana' over Icy FM that really scared them away).

As the boys cried over their newly acquired kilos so did the gods, showering Davis in a thick blanket of snow transforming our wonder land into a little wedding cake sprinkled with Lego blocks. Truly a magic site. The Dieso team comprising of Brett, Nico & Pete took the snow fall as a sign of things to come and swung into winterising mode servicing vehicles, moving plant & equipment to the Heli pads and reorganising the various storage containers. The Hill brothers too (as they have become known) swept up by the torrent of winterising activity, fired up the Excavator and 950 and 'de-blizz tailed' all of the major buildings, aesthetically and functionally improving the station out of sight!

World Meteorological day signified a special occasion for one of our MET team this year as it marked Joe Hopkins 30 years of service with the Bureau of Meteorology(by the way folks, that fella handing Joe his award, is none other than 'Our' Bob Jones!). A phone link was 'secretly' patched into the LQ and in front of the station Joe was officially awarded his certificate of service by the Tasmanian regional director. Joe's achievement was then celebrated with coffee and some of Georges specially delivered pastries, hot off Voyage 6.

With the AFL (Australian Football League) season now well under way back in Oz, a special viewing of the nights game ( Tigers v Kangaroos), secretly disguised as a live Satellite feed from Melbourne, was played on the Davis Bar TV, creating the venue for Friday drinks. The event was dually catered for by Jack carrying around a Meat Pie box (marked '4'n Twenty') screaming out 'Meat Pies' in his best Aussie accent. The various AFL supporters came dressed in their teams colours adding to atmosphere and combined with Brad's chants that the 'Dockers' will reign supreme in the Grand Final set the scene for a good night by all... It was later revealed that the game was in fact a video tape of the Ansett Cup and not a live feed of the AFL which left the die hard AFL supporters somewhat embarrassed as they hadn't tweaked to the continual references to the 'Ansett Cup' and strange team guernseys. To play it safe Darren, Ray and Mick exited the building before they could be appropriately dealt with.
Darren Harpur repairing an antenna.
As the snow falls on Davis and the sea ice freezes, we all look forward to the experiences which lay ahead.
Cheers from Davis.

If necessary, be ready to stay out overnight. Always carry extra clothes, water, high energy food (like trail mix), and a flashlight -- many people become lost because of darkness. Remember - even a short trip can become lengthened because of unexpected circumstances such as bad weather, or becoming lost or injured, so BE PREPARED!

 NEWS and VIEWS

Folks, when you're done reading this article, I urge you to write your representatives and newspapers all over this country, and DEMAND to know why, this man's speech was not published!

Finally a voice of reason!
On Thursday, May 27, 1999, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott,a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee.

What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness.

The following is a portion of the transcript-- both good & evil in the hearts of men and women.

"We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.

The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart. "In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent.

I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy - it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. "I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best. This was written way before I knew I would be speaking here today.

"Your laws ignore our deepest needs
Your words are empty air
You've stripped away our heritage
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms
And precious children die
You seek for answers everywhere
And ask the question "Why"
You regulate restrictive laws
Through legislative creed
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!"

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our makeup, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and reek havoc. Spiritual influences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? "We have refused to honor God, and in doing so,we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties.

"We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts. Political posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers. The young people of our nation hold the key.

There is a spiritual awakening taking place that will not be squelched!

"We do not need more religion. We do not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing out verbal religious garbage. We do not need more million dollar church buildings built while people with basic needs are being ignored. We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God!

"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes He did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right!

I challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School - prayer was brought back to our schools."

"Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God - given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA - I give to you a sincere challenge. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!

My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!:"

Be courageous enough to do what the media did not, let the nation hear this man's speech. Please send this out to everyone you can.!!!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

Nausea Won't Affect Your Baby:
The mild nausea commonly associated with morning sickness won't threaten your baby's well being as long as you're able to keep food down, maintain a well-balanced diet, and drink plenty of fluids. Most women with morning sickness figure out pretty quickly what they can and cannot stomach, and how many times they need to eat throughout the day. If you find prenatal vitamins hard to swallow, try taking them with food -- it may be a little easier on your stomach. If you still can't stomach them, consider eating a vitamin-fortified cereal every morning (Total is one good example). And be extra certain to eat food high in all the vitamins you and your baby need.
NOTE: Always follow the advice of your Physician!
Bald and Beautiful :
Babies often lose their hair during the first six months of life. It's entirely normal because hair growth has two stages; a growing stage and a resting phase, after which it falls out. In newborns all of the hair follicles enter the resting period at the same time. A baby may also have bald patches on his scalp from sleeping in the same position and rubbing his head against the mattress. In either case, it's nothing to worry about. By the end of your baby's first year, he may even have enough hair to comb. To reassure yourself, see BabyCenter's article.

 MOUNTAINGNOMES' FAMILY TREE NEWS

WAR WITH BARBARY PIRATES, 1801-1805:
One military engagement about which there is little information is the War with the Barbary Pirates, fought between 1801 and 1805. If you think an ancestor fought in this war, you may have trouble finding details about his participation.

Here's the history: The pirates of the Barbary States (Algiers, Morocco, Tripoli, and Tunis) declared open warfare on U.S. shipping and shipping privateers in 1801. The war ended when Tripoli sued for peace in 1805, but the U.S. Navy fought many battles in the meantime. This war is remembered in the Marine Corps Hymn, with the words "to the shores of Tripoli." For information about the war, you should investigate Robert Leckie's book "From Sea To Shining Sea" (New York, 1993).

 MOUNTAINGNOME's GRUB SHOPPE

APPLE CRISP:
This is an old-fashioned dessert to enjoy on a comfortable, relaxed evening. Crunchy sweet topping marries perfectly with tart apples; just top with vanilla ice cream and all will be right with the world. Serves six.

  • 4 cups peeled, sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-inch square baking pan. Place apples in pan; sprinkle with cinnamon, salt, and water.

In a small bowl, sift together flour and sugar. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or two forks. Drop mixture over apples. Bake 40 minutes, until top is golden.

So until next time, REMEMBER:  "Bright red meat is good for you. Fuzzy green meat is not good for you. "
